Sabrina Golin’s Geishas
Andrea Taietti
The East is not just a geographical coordinate, but a state of mind nourished by silence, grace, and gazes that seem to guard millennia-old secrets. On Saturday at 6 p.m., The Temple Gallery (via Francesco Coghetti 260) will open its doors to a unique sensory journey with the inauguration of a solo exhibition by Sabrina Golin, titled “Faces of the East. The Elegant Geishas of Sabrina Golin.”
Born in Johannesburg in 1970 to Italian parents, Sabrina Golin brings into her painting the strength of contrasts: the power of African nature, where she trained artistically, meets the ceremonial delicacy of the Asian world. Although her career has long been marked by iconic representations of African wildlife—symbols of a freedom never forgotten—in this exhibition the focus shifts to the female figure.
Her geishas are not simple portraits, but icons of a silent intensity. A suggestive exhibition path unfolds through female portraits, Eastern atmospheres, and luminous details that transform each work into a unique visual experience. Golin’s “geishas” tell stories of grace, beauty, and quiet intensity, capable of moving and surprising the viewer.
From dreamlike atmospheres to pop influences—which have also led her to reinterpret Western icons such as Marilyn Monroe—Golin’s work stands out for an aesthetic sensitivity that never becomes merely decorative. Each brushstroke is a piece of a mosaic that celebrates beauty as a form of resilience.
The exhibition will remain open to the public until May 4. After Saturday’s opening, it can be visited from Monday to Friday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., by appointment only. It is a valuable opportunity for the public of Bergamo to discover an eclectic artist who, from Vicenza—where she now lives and works—continues to weave invisible threads between her African roots and the timeless charm of the East.
